Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a key component of the next generation of Web-based applications and the Microsoft .NET platform. "Inside XML" is the best place to find detailed instructions and insights on how to take advantage of XML and the Microsoft Visual Studio "RM" development environment to create extensible, end-to-end applications. Taking an architectural approach, the book carefully describes the XML hooks to be found in the next generation of Visual Studio and the .NET platform. The book also helps developers understand XML components in the context of Microsoft's other technologies such as Microsoft SQL Server "TM" 2000 and BizTalk "TM" Server 2000, and it demonstrates in steps how to convert a traditional client/server application to an XML-based application. The authors, who are well known for their other books, columns, and technical seminars, offer the right combination of real-world experience and seminar-tested teaching to make this the ideal resource for any

This book is a learn-by-doing book. It is for anybody who needs to start using XPath today. Throughout the chapters of this book, you will be shown example after example of working code that uses XPath. As you work through the text and the examples, I think you will find code that you can adapt or extend to your own needs and purposes. Because the primary use of XPath at the time of writing is with XSLT, many of the examples in this book are focused on transforming XML documents either to HTML/XHTML or to other XML formats. If you have a background in HTML, XHTML, XML, or XSLT, that will help move you along faster. If you don’t have any markup language background, don’t worry. The introductory material in Chapter 1 will give you a start with XML and XSLT that will give you a framework for later reading. If you have problems later in this book you may want to refer back to Chapter 1 or its examples to review the necessary foundational knowledge. My aim in presenting many examples is to

This book is primarily for newcomers to XML and XSLT. It’s particularly aimed towards web developers who have some knowledge of HTML, CSS, and a smattering of javascript; but none of these are essential, and the techniques you learn in this book can just as easily be applied to transforming between XML-based markup languages as to web pages. Seasoned users of XSLT 1.0 will learn about the new datatypes, expressions, and functions of XPath 2.0 and the new facilities in XSLT that make tasks such as text processing, grouping, and creating multiple documents much easier. Although much will look familiar, there are also some fundamental changes in the XPath data model and the XSLT processing model that may take you by surprise.

Referring to specific information inside an XML document is a little like finding a needle in a haystack. XPath and XPointer are two closely related languages that play a key role in XML processing by allowing developers to find these needles and manipulate embedded information. By the time you've finished XPath and XPointer, you'll know how to construct a full XPointer (one that uses an XPath location path to address document content) and completely understand both the XPath and XPointer features it uses.

About This Book As a dedicated observer of XML development and a participant in its implementation almost since its creation, I have been amazed to witness the degree to which the software industry has come to support this technology. It has become rare to pick up a computer magazine or look at an industry Web site without seeing something about XML. As you might imagine, I believe in the need for and benefits of XML, and I want it to succeed. The developers of XML and its many applications and vocabularies realize that for XML to be used and adopted widely, it not only must be easy to understand, it must be supported by resources that help make it easy to use. In my own work with XML, I have seen the need for practical XML resources. My hope is that this book contributes to the pool of effective tools that help developers and authors work successfully with XML. The Focus of This Book There are several implementations of XML, and there are many XML processors. This book focuses on the

As you’ll discover shortly, regardless of what the cover says, this isn’t a book about Atom or RSS feeds. In fact, this is mainly a book about lots of other things, between which syndication feeds form the glue or enabling catalyst. Sure, you’ll find some quick forays into specifics of consuming and producing syndication feeds, with a few brief digressions on feed formats and specifications. However, there are better and more detailed works out there focused on the myriad subtleties involved in working with RSS and Atom feeds. Instead, what you’ll find here is that syndication feeds are the host of the party, but you’ll be spending most of your time with the guests. And, because this is a book about hacking feeds, you’ll get the chance to experiment with combinations of technology and tools, leaving plenty of room for further tinkering. The code in this book won’t be the prettiest or most complete, but it should provide you with lots of practical tools and food for thought.

This is the first book that provides a solid theoretical account of the foundation of the popular data format XML. Part I establishes basic concepts, starting with schemas, tree automata and pattern matching, and concluding with static typechecking for XML as a highlight of the book. In Part II, the author turns his attention to more advanced topics, including efficient 'on-the-fly' tree automata algorithms, path- and logic-based queries, tree transformation, and exact typechecking. The author provides many examples of code fragments to illustrate features, and exercises to enhance understanding. Thus the book will be ideal for students and researchers whether just beginning, or experienced in XML research.

More Java developers today want to work with XML, the technology that enables data to be transported intact over the Internet, but they don't have time to become XML experts. If this describes you, then you'll appreciate data binding, the new way of converting XML documents into Java objects, so those documents can be worked on and manipulated like any other Java object, then converted back to XML This new title provides an in-depth technical look at XML Data Binding. The book offers complete documentation of all features in both the Sun Microsystems JAXB API and popular open source alternative implementations (Enhydra Zeus, Exolabs Castor and Quick). It also gets into significant detail about when data binding is appropriate to use, and provides numerous practical examples of using data binding in applications.
